You can...: anti-histamines can be (mildly) effective for the allergy like symptoms in a cold.

Can but: it is not going to do much for you. The older antihistamine (benadryl, chlortrimeton etc) possess anti-cholinergic activities which may reduce the runny nose, but the newer ones don't possess much if any of this property.
