Tricyclics : And tetracyclics ( Trazadone) have a role in management of many conditions. I like to use Pamelor (nortriptyline) for fibromyalgia management, for example. As it tends to promote REM sleep. Anticholinergic side effects limit the utility of Elavil . Use of any SSRI or tricyclics must be individualized and closely monitored.

Sometimes: Certain tricyclic antidepressants can help with insomnia because they are sedating. Some can help with pain management. In general - SSRI's tend to have a much better side effect profile. I seldomly use TCA's now - unless it is to help with sleep or pain. Take care.
