Loss of parents: Look at it this way, suddenly, one of two most important people in your life no longer live in the same house with you and not available to check your homework. Basically drop out of your world. What reassures that child this disappearing act won't repeat with the remaining parent? Divorce is one of the most psychologically traumatizing event in children's lives. Damage is beyond just abandonment.

Handle w/ Care!: If divorced/divorcing parents r putting their child's interests & needs first, then dedicating themselves 2ensuring that their child feels loved & secure will be their principal consideration. Any conflict between the parents has the potential to hurt the child, making her/him feel caught in the middle, as well as responsible. Sadly, some parents don't understand kids' needs & how 2put them first.
