By compressing veins: & potentially decreasing edema (local ↑ in extracellular water). However, important to not have tourniquet band/effect at top which will undo any benefit; best support from waist/garter belt. Also best to keep moving. Movement is what powers the venous pump so that blood stair-steps through venous valves back to heart, rather than stretching out the veins resulting in varicose veins over time.
