Not normal, not rare: These side effects, while not exactly "normal," are also not uncommon. Hopefully they will disappear soon but the flu shot can rarely cause serious long-standing side effects. What is unfortunate is that a large body of research shows that flu shots are not particularly effective! Call the Dr: A large body of research indicates that immunizations against influenza are very useful. A little swelling, itch, tenderness at injection site is acceptable. There may be mild muscle aches for a few days. If your symptoms persist more than a week, consider that this may be something else not related to the shot.
