Ankle pain: the only way to know if it is broken unless it is obviously deformed or the bone is sticking out is to get an X-ray. Unfortunately, even if you can walk on it or if it is massively swollen does't mean it is or isn't broken. There have been many times in my career I thought something was broken and it wasn't in X-ray and vice versa.

ANKLE OR FOOT?: I can't determine if it's your ankle, foot, or both. Regardless, the degree of pain and swelling indicate to me an exam and x-ray is warranted. Sincerely, Dr. Latva

Answered by X-ray..: Swelling can have the obvious effect of making look large regardless if a fracture occurs or not. The only real way of making that determination is having your foot x-rayed. In the mean time, apply ice, elevate and stay off it until you have it evaluated.
