Stages I-IV: There are different classification systems for different kinds of cancer, but the most common one is called the TNM system, popularized by the ajcc. T stands for tumor, n stands for nodes (lymph nodes), and m stands for metastasis (spread to distant organs). Stage i cancer is usually limited to the organ of origin, stage iii often means spread to lymph nodes, and stage IV means distant spread.
