Cancers are...: classified by the type of cell or tissue from which they arise. This is determined by microscopic examination of a biopsy by a pathologist. Cancers of epithelial cells (which line the skin and organ surfaces) are called carcinomas, and are the most common. Sarcomas arise from connective tissues are less common, as are cancers of blood cells like leukemia and lymphoma. Many subtypes exist.
