Why do newborns breath so fast?

Immature: Newborns have immature nervous systems. They can roller coaster breathe - very fast then slow (or stop x 5 sec). This is normal. Newborn heart rates also vary more than older persons.

Newborns resp. rate: Newborns can breathe fast > 60 breaths/min. Because of ttn (transient tachpnea) or delayed clearance of lung fluid, pneumonia, meconium aspiration, respiratory distress syndrome or a metabolic acidosis. A normal respiratory rate for a newborn is 30-60 breaths/min.
