Depends: Hopefully your friend had more than just a stent placed. A newer esophageal cancer treatment, strip off the inside lining of the esophagus, where the cancer is located, then stent. ? Other treatments, medications, chemotherapy, acid blocker?? In general not spreading and not growing, is GOOD. Okay to ask questions to your friend, go with friend to next appointment. Help your friend to be well.

Obviously!: Yes,Cancer of the esophagus is typically progressive with time. Most patients get into trouble with further tumor growth and spread. But there are exceptions in that some tumors are slow growing.
