NPO 6-8 hrs before: Many imaging departments and facilities request that patients receiving an abdomen MRI not eat or drink for 6-8 hours prior to the study. Of course, in emergencies exceptions can be made. Sips of water, such as with medications, are usually fine. I would clarify the policy with the imaging department where you are getting the study, though.
