Tip of big toe numb. doesn't matter is shoe is off or on, still numb. i have ddd in my lumbar spine. could this be the cause or other ideas..

A numb toe: Numb toes can be caused by nerve damage in the nerve out close to the toe, peripheral nerve, or damage higher up near the spinal cord Usually if the damage is from the spinal nerves, eg, nerve impingement from your DDD, you would more likely have numbness all the way down your leg into the toe. Your would need to see a neurologist and get some testing done to sort this out.

Yes: Yes a numb toe can be caused by an area of stenosis of the nerve canal in the back. Other potential causes can include a pinched nerve in the foot/ankle or a vascular poroblem among others. Don't hesitate to be seen.
