BMI 57.7: Hi. The patient has a BMI that meets criteria for considering bariatric surgery. If the patient has diseases resulting from obesity (type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, etc), surgery can be very beneficial. Pre-operative evaluation will make sure the heart and lungs are up for the surgery, so various tests may be done to assess them. Obesity kills and bariatric surgery can help restore quality of life.

Bmi over 40: Someone 5'8 and 380 lb has a body mass index of 57.8. Most insurance companies will cover bariatric surgery for qualifying people with a BMI over 40, or 35 with other diseases such as diabetes. Bariatric procedures have been shown to help lose significant weight, but also improve blood sugar, blood pressure, cholesterol, back pain, and other problems. See your doctor to discuss risks, benefits.

Bariatric Surgery: A person with such high BMI is a candidate for bariatric surgery and should consider bariatric surgery! Decision can ONLY be made after understanding risks, benefits, alternatives of these operations. Life style modification, Diet and exercise are necessary adjuncts to the surgery. Plz talk to your PCP and see a Reputed bariatric surgeon.
