Blood thinners.: DVT is treated by blood thinners (anticoagulation). Initially iv medication may be used which is then switched to an oral agent. Sometimes only an oral blood thinner is used (now there are multiple options for oral meds not just coumadin). Treatment usually is anywhere from 6 months to one year depending on the location of the DVT. Ultrasounds help to follow the course of the problem.
