A member asked:

Can you take bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) for possible tooth infection until you see your dentist?

Tooth infection: NO. Do not take left over antibiotics prescribed for someone else or for another reason. Only take prescription medication for the purpose they are prescribed.

Self Medication: Do not take medications that were not prescribed for this specific problem. You don't even know if you have an infection... why take antibiotics. Make your dental visit a priority and call for an appointment now.

No: See Dentist ASAP. If infection exists the appropriate antibiotic to contain the infection can then be prescribed (than take EXACTLY as directed, there should be no pills left when you are finished. If tooth or gums are infected, dental treatment will be necessary to cure the infection. Pills alone will not affect a cure.
