8 hours is typical: Some doctors recommend nothing but water for 12 hours, and suggest that you should avoid fatty meals for 24-48 hours prior. Some doctors no longer require fasting at all. It could be argued that fasting doesn't represent the amount of lipid that is typically present in the blood, so it is less useful to look at fasting measures. Others think the post meal measurements are misleading. 8 hrs is fine
