Cholesterol test: This is a test to look at (typically) total cholesterol, ldl, HDL & triglyceride levels. Fasting means no food for typically 9 to 12 hours prior. Water is ok.

Cholesterol, TG Test: The standard lipid panel measures levels of blood cholesterol and triglycerides (tg). These lipids are carried in the circulation by various lipoprotein particles such as tg rich vldl and cholesterol rich LDL and hdl. Tg is used to estimate vldl concentration, while the cholesterol carried in LDL and HDL (ldl-c and hdl-c) is used to estimate LDL and HDL particle concentrations.
