Slow down, Craig: You mean ischemic infarction & not hemorrhage. Correct? In stroke neurology, "young" = under 40. "Young stroke" is a heterogeneous entity, i.e. there is a "laundry list" of causes, none common, some extremely rare. Workup & treatment are different than for "traditional" causes. Periodic reviews of the subject appear in the medical literature. Do a web search for "young stroke". Good luck.

Patent foramen ovale: PFO is a possible cause . patient would need a cardiac catheterization with bubble test. PFO is an opening between the right and left sides of the heart . This is usually closed in normal development . However , in some people this passageway remains open and can caused blood clots that can travel to the brain. If clot ( embolus ) blocks a blood vessel in the brain it could cause a stroke

Can be complex: Strokes in young folks are often caused by very different disorders, such as classical migraine associated with smoking and female hormones, but another to search for might be MTHFR mutations with high homocysteine, or perhaps cocaine or meth issues. Trauma of course, congenital vascular malformations. Would suggest an opinion at a nearby medical school, as there could be future risks.
