A member asked:

How does diabetes cause numbness?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

It can: Hi. Poorly controlled diabetes certainly CAN cause numbness by direct nerve damage, correlating with duration of high blood sugar. The mechanism is still not known, although several good candidate mechanisms have been proposed. Longest nerves are most likely to be affected (those to the feet). The key is good diabetes control and nutrition. Better to prevent neuropathy than treat neuropathy!
