Many possiblities: Is it the side of your thigh ? Are you over weight ? Are your pants tight ? Google 'meralgia paresthetica' or search this site to see if this has been addressed. Other possibilities would include diabetic neuropathy, lumbar disc problems with nerve root involvement, just happens (god knows why), etc.
