A member asked:

Since oxyhaemoglobin is unstable, what causes or triggers oxygen and haemoglobin to combine with each other?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Iron: Oxygen binds to iron. Rest of the hemoglobin provides the environment for reversible binding. Oxyhemoglobin in not unstable, oxygen binding is reversible.
