See your physician: Symptoms from degenertive disc disease (which is common with advanced age) should initially be treated with conservative measures (PT, massage, pain medications, etc). See your physician for further discussion. Get second opinion: Based upon your MRI description, I would prefer to employ conservative physical therapy and "tincture of time", but if you have been advised to have surgery, you should obtain second opinion.
