See Your Doc: Most of the time acute painful lumps in the axilla (armpit) are from an infectious cause. This is a swollen lymph node. They swell when they are fighting a bacteria or virus. A scratch by an animal on the arm could cause this. At your age, unless you have strong family history of breast cancer it's not likely this is a sign of cancer. However, you may need antibiotics so you should see a doc.
