See allergist: There are many brands and several classes of drugs for asthma. The most important step is identifying the triggers which are often allergens. Drug treatment is often necessary but would not work well without proper avoidance measures. Your allergist will be able to help you on making the right decision.

Depends on severity: Asthma severity is classified by how often someone has symptoms. Therapy for mild asthma is inhaled beta-agonists such as albuterol. If albuterol is needed more than twice per week or if symptoms occur at night, a longer acting medicine with corticosteroids with or without long-acting beta agonists is added such as fluticasone or salmeterol+fluticasone. There are many drugs of the same type.

Several: Several medicines are available for the treatment of asthma. In general they include controller medicines ( inhaled steroids, long acting beta agonists, leukotriene blockers) and reliever medications ( short acting bronchodilators). Avoidance of known triggers important as well. In some cases, allergy immunotherapy may play a role as well.
