Lung function: Asthma can be diagnosed clinically, but often times pulmonary function testing (pft) will help in the diagnosis. Pfts allow doctors to evaluate the your lung's volume and airflow and can tell if your smaller or larger airways are a problem. In addition, allergy testing may be indicated if you also have allergy symptoms as they may need to be evaluated as well.

Rarely needed: Your usual patient will be diagnosed by physical findings and history. A pattern of recurrent wheezing episodes over time ( months to years ) makes most testing for diagnosis unnecessary. In mild cases a provocative test, like a methacholine challenge with lung function tests may be needed. Lung function studies may also be done as a way to follow therapy in moderate to severe disease.
