Develop asthma: An infant may be born with a higher risk of developing asthma based on genetics, maternal smoking, RSV infection etc, but asthma is usually thought of a disease that develops over time. In children, asthma symptoms typically develop before age 3-4 years old-- a time when performing lung function tests is not feasible.

Gene + environment: You inherited the genes but only develop the disease during a certain moment when gene, environment , and a 3rd factor ( viral infection being the strongest suspect) interact. For example, if one of the identical twin pair developed asthma, the other one will have a close to 60% chance of getting the same disease, in fraternal twin, the chance is close to 30%. Thus genes do play a role.
