Corticosteroids: Inhaled corticosteroids such as Flovent (fluticasone), Pulmicort (budesonide), qvar, alvesco, (ciclesonide) advair etc. Are the best medicines for asthma because they treat the underlying cause which is inflammation. If the patient is acutely ill or in the er then these medicines would not be used. First the patient would have to be treated/stabilized with oral corticosteroids and albuterol.
