A non-toxic multinodular goiter can grow over decades at a rate of 0-20% a year.Taking idodine by mouth in supplements or drugs or havng a heart cath can lead to toxic multinodular goiter. Most thyroid nodules with cancer are "cold nodules" that do not light up as producing thryoid hormone by radioactive iodine scan.
