Echocardiogram: An echocardiogram (echo) is an ultrasound picture of the heart. A TTE is a transthoracic echo meaning they do the echo through the chest wall to look at heart valves and other structures. A stress echo looks to see if the walls of the heart lose function when you are stressed by walking on a treadmill or biking. The TTE looks at structure of the heart and stress echo looks at function.

Ultrasound: A complete TTE is a transthoracic echocardiogram. Essentially an ultrasound probe is placed on your chest to visualize heart size and function. The stress portion means they will do an ultrasound at rest and then right after stress with exercise on a treadmill or a medication to increase your heart rate mimicking exercise. Stress can bring out abnormalities not seen at rest.
