Causes: Overweight, artifactual measurement, cuff too small for arm, excess salt in the diet, excess alcohol consumption, use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatories in susceptible people, genetic predisposition, most any form of kidney disease, licorice. There are other causes but those are the most common.
