Depression: can improve in a week. Anxiety may take a bit longer. Remeron is one of the best antidepressants for refractory depression. It takes a while to get settled in if you discontinuing Effexor (venlafaxine). Some of the action of Remeron is thought to be due to activity at two of the endogenous opiate receptors. Remeron is used as a treatment for anxiety as well as depression.
