Wait for results: If you have had untreated GERD for more than 15 years, you may have early stages of esophageal cancer, ie Barrett's Esophagus. Your risks increase with history of smoking, and alcohol use. However, it is impossible to guess what stage of cancer you could be at without knowing a lot more about your history and prior treatment for GERD. If you smoke, quit - and reduce alcohol intake.
