Get tested!: Hi. I hate to sound trite, but tell your dad to have his thyroid function TESTED! It's easy! He can talk with his doctor about symptoms & family history of thyroid disease. The doc will test the appropriate labs, and then you'll know! Bear in mind, NO symptoms are specific for thyroid disease, and your suspicion that he might have a thyroid problem could be due to non-thyroid issues.

Thyroid symptoms: Hypothyroidism could certainly contribute to weight gain and constipation. But your dad's symptoms could be from many different causes, not just thyroid. Best to have him see his doctor for a checkup.
