Peripheral neuropath: Your description fits more with neuropathy which is essentially problem with nerve and often started with numbness, tingling and progress with burning and needle pricking or even sharp stabbing pain. The reason and source could be many such as diabetes, lumbar spine issue, etc. suggest to have him check out by his primary care.
