Bursitis?: A common cause of these symptoms is bursitis, inflammation of the cushion overlying the bony prominence of the outer hip. Avoidance of pressure on it (such as lying on side), heat, and ibuprofen can help, but it can take a few weeks to resolve. A superficial injection of anesthetic and steroid can provide faster relief.
