Three Liters: There is a three liter over one hour recommendation that is common for simple constipation. Drink three liters of water over one to two hours and see how your bowels move.

A lot: While there is really no good scientific back-up for the recommendation of "8 glasses a day", certainly that much wouldn't harm you, & 64 ounces a day is actually not a bad guideline. A healthy kidney and heart can handle about a liter (33 ounces) per hour, so I don't think you are in any danger of over-doing it. Many find warm to hot water can help move bowels along with dietary fiber & exercise
