If prescribed...: If it was prescribed that way by the doctor who is treating you then you should be able to take it like that. Make sure the nurse's advise is in agreement with what the provider recommended, especially with narcotics which can be very dangerous if not taken properly.

Depends on pain: That dose sounds high, but it depends on how bad the pain is, most people do get by on less. Call the nurse to make sure you clearly understand the discharge instruction. If you're not in so much pain you can take less pain medications until you speak with him/her.

One every 4 hours...: If you can get by on one every four hours and only if you need it, you would be better off. When it comes to opioids (narcotics), using the least you can to take the edge off the pain is best. Remember to drink plenty of water (enough to keep your urine clear) and to eat food with plenty of fiber to improve circulation, detoxify and help avoid opioid-induced constipation. Also may add a stool med.
