ConstipationRelation: Chronic opioid use will inevitably affect GI motility because of the opioid receptors present in the GI tract. It is unavoidable but can be addressed. Since motility or peristasis, which moves intestinal contents in a coordinated fashion, is diminished a mild stimulant laxative is needed to encourage movement. An osmotic laxative also helps to add fluid to the stool to make it easier to pass.
