Maybe: You must realize that what ever the mother ingests there is some passing to the breastmilk. They would certainly be a small amount of opioid medication passed on to the baby. In general this is safe however over long periods of time it would be possible for the child to perhaps be somewhat opioid tolerant and therefore there's always the possibility of opioid withdrawal. I would ask your obstetrician their opinion.

Not recommended: Opioids are excreted into breast milk. There can be enough to cause sedation, withdrawal symptoms, and respiratory depression. Some doctors might prescribe the lowest possible dose for the shortest time with close observation of the infant. It definitely would not be advisable if you need higher doses for a longer period of time.

Wouldn't recommend: Vicodin and Norco (hydrocodone and acetaminophen) are brand names of hydrocodone. Hydrocodone can be passed to your baby via breast milk and cause excessive sleepiness, difficulty feeding, and most importantly, suppression of your baby's drive to breathe. My advice is to speak to your doctor so he or she can give you a safer alternative while you are breastfeeding.

Not recommended: as hydrocodone the opioid in vicodin is secreted in the breast milk it is generally not recommended as the infany may suffer side efects of the hydrocodone such as decreased breathing and lethargy. discuss options for pain relief with your physician. Another consideration is that the World Health Organization does suggest the skin to skin contact is most important.

Pump and dump: Your breast milk. Products like Vicodin are secreted in the breast milk and are not safe for the baby. If you are going to be on meds for a short while you can pump the milk and throw it out. Use formula while on the meds.
