Two questions: what axillary temperature is considered a fever in a newborn? what can cause extreme salivation in a 6 weeks old baby?

100.4: A true fever is a temperature above 100.4. If your baby is under 8 weeks of age and appears to be ill, it is best to contact your pediatrician. Most accurate method of taking temp in an infant is rectally. Re salivation, likely normal if baby is happy, eating well and healthy. If baby is sick, has a fever, call pediatrician ASAP

Use rectal temp: In infants, axillary temperatures are less reliable, as rectal temperatures are considered more accurate. A recital temp of 100.4 degrees F or higher is considered a fever in newborns and young infants. For axillary temps, the general rule is to add half a degree F to the reading. Many young healthy infants salivate excessively, a physiological reaction controlled by the autonomic nervoua system.
