100.4 F: If a newborn infants under a month of age has a temperature of 100.4 degrees f (or 38.0 degrees c), that is considered a fever. Babies under a month of age with a fever must be seen and evaluated right away. The best way to check for a fever is using a rectal thermometer. Oral, ear, and axillary (under the armpit) thermometers are not as accurate in a newborn baby.
