Are you sure?: I have no fear of rats or mice BUT I also never had to do anything with them to become a physician. In the US, you choose your university major and classes - ones that do experiments on rats are not necessarily required. You may not need to face that fear at all. If you do have to take classes working with rats - face your fear, if you truly want the end result it won't stop you.

New job: I don't believe in using animals for research much. It is not necessary to become a doctor. There are enlightened avenues in research which use cell and tissue lines for research and don't subject animals to research. If you are afraid of them, nothing will be worth having to work with them. Get another job and breathe a sigh of relief and know that you were not part of hurting anything for cash

First things first.: If you intend to go into a field of research that uses rats and mice, and you have a phobia of them, it seems there is a simple solution. Study something else. You are 17, and I mean no offense but I doubt you have experienced enough to know what you are truly passionate about. Science is a huge field with multiple disciplines. Think of life as a journey of the self. Follow your heart.
