Genetic tendency: There are genes that can be inherited from a parent that contribute to chronic pancreatitis, and some cases of idiopathic (of unknown cause) pancreatitis have turned out to be related to the presence of these genes.

May help diagnose: There are at least 3 different genetic mutations that are hereditary and can cause recurrent pancreatitis. If there is a family history of pancreatitis this becomes more likely. If no other cause is found for your pancreatitis it may be reasonable to do genetic testing
