I cut my index finger open at work on some steel. just below the tip going across. had 4 stitches. 2nd july. finger all numb still from tip to base.

Takes time: I'm not sure why, if your only injury was at the tip of the finger you would be numb at the base of the finger. The tip of the finger is so sensitive that you may just be interpreting loss of sensation at the tip as including the entire finger. Also swelling will cause numbness. The good news is that almost all nerve injuries in a finger regenerate but it can take a year or more.
