Trauma, infection: Or hormones. Intermittent catheterization or indwelling catheters can induce squamous metaplasia, hpv, which is a std as well as other STDs can cause it. Estrogen pretreated men undergoing gender change have urethral metaplasia. Can be associated with bladder and urethral cancers. Sometimes harmless and of no known cause.
