Muscle strain: It is possible that earlier in the day if you were doing something strenuous you strained your gluteus muscles. If you have no other symptoms this is likely the cause. If you have other symptoms or are getting worse you should see your doctor to get checked out.

Unlikely durin sleep: Your case is complex because we need to know much more about you including wt, sports/activities you were doing the days before ie bike or horse riding.In brief people don't pull muscles during sleep.this could be a disc, hip, SI joint or muscle problem.SEE a sports or PMR MD for a thorough eval.Physical therapy and muscle release may be in order presuming other dx like hernia or GI are negative
