Neck pain: It could be due to a strained muscle or due to muscular tension/ posture related. It could also mean an inflammation or infection of the meninges which is the sac surrounding the brain and spinal cid. It is difficult to tell without examination. See your doctor

It could be muscle: A simple test is if you tilt your head to the right and the pain hurts on the left and vice versa this means you're pulling a muscle. However there are a lot of confounders because the neck has disks and facet joints always need to be taken into account. Would discuss this with your physician to help give you a clear diagnosis
