Possible crack: If you do not have a deep wear area (where the outer surface enamel is worn off down to the inner layer of dentin) then you could have a hairline crack. If cracked, you may need a crown or root canal treatment. You did not mention if there is a filling in the tooth, if so, you may have a weakened tooth which is prone to fracture (cracking). Cracked tooth syndrome.

Second opinion: Seek a second opinion or return to your dentist. If you are in pain and uncomfortable, another set of x-rays may be necessary as this could be a cavity, fracture or infection. Take care.
