Exercise: Stairs are an excellent form of aerobic fitness. Start with walking, take breaks when you get winded. Aim for 10 minutes of stair climbing 3-4 times pet week. Build up slowly to 30 minutes. When you feel comfortable you can run slowly. Be sure to drink water before, during, and after your workout. Stretch afterwards. Good luck!

Joint stress: Running on stairs can be quite stressful on joints and can put you at higher risk for injury, especially if starting workout routine from previous sedentary lifestyle. It is best to be evaluated by health care provider before starting any exercise routine so provider can determine if safe to start and what activities are best recommended for you and your current fitness level.

Yes: Stairs are great exercise, but be safe. Running on stairs may cause a fall or allow you to run into someone else. Try holding the rail, and/or just walking the stairs and spend a longer time at it. Also you can try going up and down just the bottom stair. Try putting one foot on the stair, then bring the OTHER knee to your chest then floor, then first foot back to floor and switch stair foot.
