It depends: Some forms of diabetes, particularly the type related to excess weight(fat) can go into remission - basically cured. This usually requires significant weight loss or bariatric(weight loss) surgery. But to be honest most forms of diabetes cannot be "cured" but rather controlled either through diet and lifestyle and/or medications.

Proper eating helps: quite a bit! Diabetes Type II adult onset is frequently driven by bad lifestyle choices such as too much food and not enough exercise. Type I is driven by other factors and is harder to "cure". So far, there is no "cure" for either one. Gastric bypass surgery is being investigated as a means of helping control Type II diabetes but generally speaking, patients who get this were already obese.

Diabetes: First there are two types of diabetes. The first type (type 1) just doesn't have insulin. Insulin is the treatment. The second one (type II) is due to the body losing some of its ability to respond to insulin (insulin resistance). Metformin is a medicine that helps improve that. Other drugs increase the amount of insulin in the body to overcome resistance (including ..more insulin).

Lifestyle Change: I work directly with patients w/ Type2 Diabetes to help them reverse their insulin resistance and reduce or d/c meds by changing their lifestyle. This almost always involves significant changes. The goals usually involve weight loss, in addition to changes in stress management, sleep, nutrition, and social support. This is achieved through intensive lifestyle counseling, either in person or online.
